What happened

Anthropic on Oct. 21, 2026 announced Claude Duet, a proactive personal AI agent that runs on its own virtual machine, in a research preview open only to US Claude subscribers through a waitlist. Duet is built on the Opus 5.5 model, comes with standalone Android and iOS apps, and generates a daily briefing of action items from connected apps. Engadget reports that Anthropic says its $20-per-month Pro plan will get access at general availability, while OpenAI's comparable Dots agent is currently limited to Pro-tier plans that start at $100 per month.

What we know

  • Duet is available through a waitlist limited to Claude subscribers in the US, per Engadget.
  • Duet runs on Opus 5.5 and has standalone Android and iOS apps, per Engadget.
  • Anthropic says Duet runs on its own virtual machine and works in the background without an open Claude session, per Engadget.
  • Anthropic says Pro plan ($20 per month) subscribers will get access at general availability; Dots is currently limited to OpenAI plans starting at $100 per month, per Engadget.
  • Anthropic says Duet checks connected accounts every few hours to conserve plan limits, and shares usage with other Claude tools including Code, per Engadget.
  • Anthropic says Duet uses a new classifier and system prompt to prevent leaks of sensitive information, never directly sees passwords or sign-in tokens, and passes health or personal finance information only when users explicitly instruct it to, per Engadget.

What we don't know yet

  • When general availability and Pro-plan access will begin; Anthropic has given no date in the sources reviewed.
  • How quickly Duet will consume plan usage limits, given that it shares limits with Claude Code.
  • How well the new classifier and system prompt prevent data leaks; Anthropic said it would share more on safety protections in the coming days, and no independent testing has been reported.
  • How reliably Duet decides when to message users; Anthropic says it is still testing and tuning that judgment.

Why it matters

Duet gives Claude's $20-per-month Pro subscribers a path to a background agent that OpenAI currently limits to plans starting at $100 per month, but it asks users to connect their accounts and share usage limits with Claude Code.
