Google: a 'small handful' of Android apps need tuning on Intel Googlebooks

What happened
Three of the five Googlebooks announced so far run Intel Core 5 chips, and Google has now said some "complex" Android apps and games need developer tuning to run well on them. Google gave the statement to Android Authority, and Engadget reported it on Oct. 5. Google says the vast majority of Android apps run smoothly on both Intel and Qualcomm models, but it has not said which apps are affected or what the problems are.
What we know
- Per Engadget, quoting a Google statement to Android Authority, a "small handful of complex apps or games" need developer tuning to run their best on Intel-based Googlebooks.
- Google's stated reason, per the same statement, is that many Android apps were originally designed for Arm chips.
- Per Engadget, the launch lineup has three Intel Core 5 models (Acer, ASUS, Lenovo) and two Arm models with the Snapdragon X Elite chip (Dell, HP).
- Per Engadget, Intel Googlebooks use a translation layer to run Android's Arm code. Engadget says Google has previously stated that this reduces performance and battery life on x86 Chromebooks. Apps compiled for x86 do not have the issue.
- Per Engadget, Google has said that unoptimized Android apps can still be installed from the Play Store, and it also offers a curated list of optimized apps.
What we don't know yet
- Which apps or games are affected on Intel models, and how large the performance gap is. Google did not say.
- Whether the Arm-based Dell and HP models run these apps better. Engadget says it has not yet tested the models.
- How Google defines "small handful" against the total number of Android apps on the Play Store.
- Whether a separate 9to5Google headline is accurate that the Slack web app cannot be installed on Googlebooks on day one. Only the headline was available to us, not the article text.
Why it matters
Buyers choosing between the Intel and Snapdragon Googlebooks have no list of affected apps, so they cannot check whether the software they rely on is among the ones needing tuning. App developers face tuning work on Intel hardware if they want parity.
