What happened

OpenAI said on Oct. 21 that its GPT-6 Astra, GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Luna models, plus its Codex coding agent, are rolling out in private preview in Google Cloud's Model Garden, with general availability planned in the coming weeks. That puts OpenAI's models on Amazon Web Services, Microsoft and Google, the three largest US cloud providers. Amazon began hosting them in April after Microsoft's exclusive licence ended, and Microsoft remains OpenAI's primary cloud partner, per OpenAI.

What we know

  • Per The Next Web, the three models are in private preview for select enterprise customers, and OpenAI plans general availability in the coming weeks.
  • Per The Next Web, customers buy through Google Cloud Marketplace, can draw down existing Google Cloud spending commitments, and receive one Google Cloud invoice.
  • Per CNBC, Amazon announced plans to host OpenAI models the day after Microsoft's exclusivity ended, and hosting began in April.
  • Per CNBC, Google Cloud's annualized revenue growth accelerated to about 82% in the second quarter from 63% in the first; Amazon and Microsoft posted 37% and 42%. All three report quarterly results next week.
  • Per The Next Web, Google says prompts and outputs stay inside the customer's data perimeter and are not used to train models; Anthropic's Claude is already on Google's platform alongside Gemini.

What we don't know yet

  • Financial terms, including how much of model sales Google keeps. Reuters, as cited by The Next Web, says cloud providers usually take a cut, but neither company has disclosed the split.
  • Pricing and the exact general availability date beyond the stated 'coming weeks'.
  • Whether OpenAI's models on Google Cloud will draw enterprise customers away from Google's own Gemini 4 Argon. An analyst quoted by Axios said Gemini now has to win customers with OpenAI next to it, which is an opinion, not a measured outcome.
  • The timing for availability in Google Antigravity and the Gemini Agent, which both companies describe only as 'soon'.

Why it matters

Enterprises with Google Cloud commitments can now buy OpenAI models without a separate contract, and Gemini competes for the same budgets on the same shelf. For OpenAI, which is courting investors at a reported $1.4 trillion valuation and targeting an IPO, broader distribution is a route to enterprise revenue beyond Microsoft.
