WhatsApp guests can join calls by link, but only account holders can start them

What happened
Meta has added guest calling to WhatsApp: a person with no WhatsApp account can join a call from a link, in a web browser, without installing the app. The host must approve each guest, who waits in a lobby until admitted and can be removed at any time. Starting a call still requires a WhatsApp account, and guests cannot see participants' phone numbers, send messages or add other people.
What we know
- Per Meta's newsroom post, anyone can now be invited to a WhatsApp call even without a WhatsApp account.
- Per The Verge and Engadget, every guest needs the host's approval, waits in a waiting room until admitted, and can be removed from the call at any time.
- Per The Verge, guests cannot see other participants' phone numbers, send messages or add anyone directly; Engadget reports the same limits and adds that guests cannot start calls.
- Per Engadget, guests can join 1:1 or group calls from a browser and use screen sharing, hand raising and emoji reactions, with no time limit on their participation. The Verge says guests keep these features with end-to-end encryption.
- Per The Verge and Engadget, Google and Outlook calendar integrations for WhatsApp calls, delivered as a plugin that adds a call link to calendar invites, are due 'later this year'.
What we don't know yet
- Which countries and platforms have the feature now. Engadget and The Verge do not give a regional rollout schedule.
- How end-to-end encryption is applied to browser guests. The Verge states calls are encrypted, but the excerpt of Meta's post we reviewed does not describe the mechanism.
- The exact release date for the calendar plugin; Meta says only 'later this year'.
Why it matters
Hosts on WhatsApp can now reach clients, relatives or colleagues who do not use the app. That puts it in the same territory as Zoom and Google Meet link-based calls, and the host-approval gate is the main control against uninvited joiners.
