WhatsApp lets people join calls from a browser with no account, if the host approves

What happened
WhatsApp guests can now join 1:1 or group calls from a web browser without a WhatsApp account, according to Meta and Engadget. Guests cannot start calls. They can only accept an invitation, and the call host must approve them before they get in. Meta also plans a calendar plugin for later this year that would create WhatsApp calls from Google or Outlook calendars.
What we know
- Meta's newsroom says anyone can now be invited to a WhatsApp call, even without a WhatsApp account.
- Per Engadget, guests join 1:1 or group calls from a browser and need the host's approval before entering.
- Per Engadget, guests cannot start calls, see other participants' phone numbers, send messages or add people to the call.
- Per Engadget, approved guests can share their screen, raise a hand and react with thumbs-up and heart emojis, with no time limit on their participation.
- Per Engadget, a calendar plugin for creating calls from Google or Outlook calendars is due "later this year".
What we don't know yet
- Which countries and platforms the feature is available in, and whether the rollout is staged. The sources do not say.
- Whether guest calls get the same end-to-end encryption as account-holder calls. Neither source addresses it.
- What data Meta collects from guests, such as device or network identifiers. Neither source says.
- The exact date of the calendar plugin release. The sources give only "later this year".
Why it matters
Hosts using WhatsApp for client or business calls can now include people who have no account. That puts the service in more direct competition with FaceTime's guest option and with browser-based meeting tools. The sources do not yet answer the privacy and encryption questions for guests.
